    Today’s News: Updates

Posted  July 26, 2022  by  Anonymous

    Papal reconciliation visit:

    An apology from Pope Francis.

Giving the Pope a headdress is not being well received online, however – I am seeing some negative tweets on this tonight.

The apology was generally welcomed, with some comment also that the Discovery doctrine has not yet been revoked.

    A useful reference:

On a side note, an update on the “boil water” advisories – the Trudeau government has made a huge difference.

    CPC leadership mpaign:

So this morning Angus Reid released a poll showing that the Conservatives would have a better chance of winning government with Charest rather than Poilievre.?
And then within a couple of hours, former PM Stephen Harper took the wind out of Charest’s sails by releasing his endorsement of Poilievre.?
So, just another day in nadian politics, I guess.

    Ukraine update:?

Ukraine is on the attack now.

(HIMARS means High Mobility Artillery Rocket System)?

Yesterday Mark Sumner at Daily Kos summarized the fear and chaos in Russia’s situation now:?
Even though Russia spent much of last week floating claims that they were going to take more and more and more of Ukraine, the truth seems to be that Putin’s offensive in the Donbas has stalled out short of objectives.?
While there continues to be fierce exchanges at many points along the front line, and Russia continues to launch attacks toward positions like Bakhmut and Bohorodychne, there are no confirmed reports of a signifint gain by Russian forces in over two weeks.?
In that same period, a number of villages either returned to Ukraine or been thrown into dispute as Ukraine has refused to give Russian forces a chance to tch their breath.?
At this point, the Ukrainian ministry of defense estimates the Russians have suffered 39,000 killed in action over the course of the invasion. U.S. intelligence estimates that 85% of the Russian military is already actively engaged in Ukraine.?
When Russia discovered it could not quickly take all of Ukraine, it withdrew and refocused on pturing a much smaller area. Months later, it hasn’t managed to accomplish even that.?

    And on the lighter side:

    Some random stuff:

    Today’s news: Nelson moments

Posted  July 9, 2022  by  Anonymous

    ?

Today seemed to be a day of “Nelson” moments.?
There was that day-long Rogers outage:

And that story about SCOTUS justice Brett Kavanaugh being chased out of Morton’s by protestors:

    And?Tamara Lich?is back in jail:

I’m reading angry tweets that Lich is a martyr — but honestly, what did she think would happen after she breached her bail conditions? Her lawyers did her no favours.

And?Elon Musk wants to pull out of the Twitter deal.

You know, I always believed? that the only reason Musk wanted Twitter was beuse he had promised to reinstate Trump, but then it got too complited and Musk never actually wanted to work that hard.

And trying to distract attention from the Jan 6 hearings:

And trying to distract attention from Biden’s success:

And?wishful-thinking “Covid is over, isn’t it?”

And Poilievre, of course — we knew it wouldn’t take long for nadian pundits to decide that nadian voters really should give Poilievre a chance, but for crying out loud, his Convoy Walk was only a week ago!?

    Then again, it’s Fife, so…

    So in conclusion:

Today’s News: Looking for their soul

Posted  July 8, 2022  by  Anonymous

First up, some comment about what has happened to the soul of the Conservative party in nada:

Ottawa journalist Rachel Gilmore had a major article on Global News today – How close is too close to the far-right? Why some experts are worried about nada’s MPs.?

She is writing about Conservative support for the Convoy, particularly from Poilievre, and how this n legitimize the far-right in nada. As we see the United States reening toward a fascist white supremacy ditch, it gives me hope to see nadian media stepping up and taking seriously the risk of white supremacy in nadian politics.
    Gilmore says:?
It’s unclear why Poilievre “felt that he needed to” meet with Topp, said Stephanie rvin, a former CSIS analyst who now teaches at rleton University.
“But it definitely was a choice with consequences,” she said — including, potentially, emboldening and legitimizing the more extreme views among the convoy’s supporters.?
…experts are starting to worry about the influence politicians could have in legitimizing extreme ideas.
?“They seem to be playing this culture war knowingly,” said Evan Balgord, executive director of the nadian Anti-Hate Network, in an interview with Global News.?
For Balgord, what Poilievre chose to do on June 30 “wasn’t a surprise.”?
“He was positioning himself to earn the support of the far-right in his leadership race.”?
Gilmore has been doing an extraordinary job in covering nada’s far right – for example, this tweet:

Finally we see a journalist used the definite description –“zero evidence” — instead of mealy-mouthed bafflegab.?

She is hitting a nerve, too — here’s Poilievre’s hysteril reaction to her article:

Scrimshaw notes how incredibly stupid and thin-skinned it was for Poilievre to issue this press release:

But why this press release matters is that the Poilievre team just tipped their hands about a very important point – they n get blown off message incredibly easily.?
A TV interview with Evan Solomon got Poilievre to confirm he’d fire the Governor of the Bank Of nada, and now an article about Convoy ties to the far right has Poilievre invoking Trudeau’s Blackface (I’ll leave it to your imagination how those two things happened).?
It’s genuinely thin-skinned bullshit, but even more than it being thin-skinned, it’s just not a good trait in a politil leader to have the politil equivalent of Tourette’s Syndrome, to quote the post-Sorkin West Wing.?
Swinging at every pitch in politics is a disaster, beuse sometimes the right move is to avoid the trap, and this pattern of behaviour from Poilievre and his team is evidence that he doesn’t have that tool in his arsenal.?
He is as addicted to the news cycle and the Twitter likes and the Facebook views that he has to pump out this shit daily, but the problem is, sometimes you don’t have to make news. Sometimes, it’s better to sit one out, and just leave an unfriendly article alone.?
How many more people do you think saw the Global article at the core of this fight after his press release? Giving oxygen to this story is an insane idea if you’re Poilievre.
Nevertheless, she persisted. Here is a follow-up story tonight:
Undoubtedly, there is additional stuff to come on this story.

And yes, I agree with Steve:

Next up, some comment about what has happened to the soul of the Republin party in the United States:

The Atlantic has a huge article out tonight by Mark Liebovich about what Trump has done to the Republin party: The Most Pathetic Men in Ameri.?

Trump said and did obviously awful and dangerous things—racist and cruel and achingly dumb and downright evil things. But on top of that, he is a uniquely tiresome individual, easily the sorest loser, the most prodigious liar, and the most interminable victim ever to occupy the White House. He is, quite possibly, the biggest crybaby ever to toddle across history’s stage, from his inaugural-crowd hemorrhage on day one right down to his bitter, ketchup-flinging end.?
Seriously, what public figure in the history of the world comes close?
My former New York Times colleague David Brooks wrote it best: “We’ve got this perverse situation in which the vast analytic powers of the entire world are being spent trying to understand a guy whose thoughts are often just six fireflies beeping randomly in a jar.”?
Better objects of our scrutiny—and far more compelling to me—are the slavishly devoted Republins whom Trump drew to his side.?
It’s been said before, but n never be emphasized enough: Without the complicity of the Republin Party, Donald Trump would be just a glorified geriatric Fox-watching golfer.?
I’ve interviewed scores of these collaborators, trying to understand why they did what they did and how they could live with it.?
?… The courage and character of Ukraine stands in perverse contrast to Ameri’s cowering Republin Party, whose resistance might as well have been led by the Uvalde police.?
?It remains astonishing to me that, after everything we’ve been through with Trump and everything we’re still learning, he remains anything but radioactive in his party.?

Wow, that’s gonna leave a mark. I hope.

Moving on, the Ukraine war is grinding along with Ukraine gradually winning in the south and maybe starting to gain some advantage in the east.

Russia seems to be running a little short of troops:

This is not an action Russia would take if it were winning. I hope Ukraine will take advantage of this.

And in some Saskatchewan news related to Ukraine:

Finally, speaking of journalists, here’s what we would be reading about if Lord of the Rings happened today:

    Finally, this:

Today’s news: Comments on the passing scene

Posted  July 6, 2022  by  Anonymous

Its been a crazy day, eh??

    Patrick Brown is out:

    Scrimshaw writes:?

this is probably good for the Tory Party in terms of general election posture in 3 years, beuse with Brown out of the race, it basilly stops Poilievre from having to continue his tack right.?
It’s now not the se that he has anything resembling a threat to the leadership, and if he’s smart, he n tone back the negativity and the anger and start a more fulsome pivot to the centre, which will enable him to avoid any more quotes or moves in the leadership that end up fucking him in the General.?
Wise advice, which is why I wouldn’t expect Poilievre to follow it — he’ll say something stupid again soon.

And here’s the morning “media take”:

    Boris Johnson is almost out.?
His only accomplishment, Brexit, is a disaster for the UK economy and may well lead to the creation of a separate Scotland and a unified Ireland.

The United States has lost its mind.?

    Again.

Finally, here’s some stupid shit from rich people:

    Like this, Part One:

    And this, Part Two:

And this is why transphobia matters:
